Stop Scrolling. Start Creating.

This summer, I hosted my very first Photo Embroidery Workshop, and to be honest… I wasn’t sure what to expect.

What happened was even better than I imagined.  A room full of people gathered around a table with photographs, colorful thread, and absolutely no pressure to make something “perfect.” We laughed, learned a few new stitches, made a few new friends, and watched each photograph slowly become something completely unique.

No two projects looked alike…. And that was exactly the point.  One of the things I love most about photo embroidery is that there isn’t a right answer. You decide what deserves attention, what to embellish, which details to highlight and which ones to leave untouched.

It’s a little like life.  The same photograph can tell a hundred different stories depending on what you choose to notice.

As a photographer, I’ve spent the last 16 years encouraging families to preserve their memories. But this year, I made a promise to myself that I would spend more time creating simply for the joy of creating. I took a pottery class. I picked up embroidery. I became a beginner again.

And it reminded me how good it feels to make something with your own hands.

We spend so much of our lives consuming… Scrolling. Watching. Saving ideas we’ll “try someday.”  This workshop was an invitation to do the opposite.  To make something imperfect, personal, and completely your own.

Our first workshop featured Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and it was so much fun watching everyone interpret the same artwork in their own way. Some stitched movement into the sky. Others focused on texture. Every piece reflected the personality of the person creating it, and everyone left with a project they could continue enjoying throughout the summer.

It was everything I had hoped it would be.

On Thursday, August 27, we’ll gather again at Blank Space Community Center for another relaxed evening of creativity, conversation, and stitching. Whether you’ve never threaded a needle before or you’ve embroidered for years, this class is designed to be welcoming, encouraging, and fun.

You’ll receive everything you need, learn a handful of beginner-friendly techniques, and leave with a beautiful project that’s uniquely yours.

More than anything, you’ll give yourself permission to spend two hours creating instead of scrolling.  And I think we all need a little more of that.
