One More Summer Like This

Last week I took my kids to the beach, and it got me thinking about summer memories.  When I think back to my own childhood summers, I don’t remember every trip we took or every detail of every vacation. What I remember are the little things.

The smell of boardwalk pizza, the squawk of Jersey seagulls hoping someone would drop a French fry, sandy feet, sunburned noses, the excitement of finishing the summer reading challenge at the library, and the ride home after a long day in the sun when everyone fell asleep in the car.

The funny thing about memories is that the moments that stay with us are rarely the ones we planned. They’re the little things.

As parents, summer can feel like a race. We’re juggling camps, vacations, schedules, and trying to squeeze every last drop out of the season. Somewhere in the middle of all that, it’s easy to miss the fact that these are the days we’ll someday look back on and call the good old days.  And if your kids are anything like mine, they seem to change overnight.

One year we’re riding Elmo’s Rocking Roller Coaster. The next we’re heading straight for Batman. One year I’m packing juice boxes and snacks. The next they’re asking if they can wander the boardwalk with friends.

It happens so gradually that we barely notice it.  Until we do.

That’s why this month’s Photo Bestie project isn’t about taking better photos. It’s about paying attention.  This summer, what is their favorite summer treat? Who are the people they spend their days with? What adventures are they having? What little traditions make this season uniquely yours?  Because one day, these ordinary summers become the stories we tell.

So I created The One More Summer Like This Project. I hope you’ll save the graphic below and use it throughout the season as a gentle reminder to notice the moments that might otherwise slip by.

There is no prize for finishing first. No deadline. No pressure to complete every prompt.

Just permission to slow down, pay attention, and preserve a few memories from this season of life.

Because there will never be another summer exactly like this one.
