natural toy cleaner

As I laid sweet baby angel face down into his crib around 9PM, I watched him swiftly drift to sleep while I planned my action packed Saturday evening.

You see, late night Target runs have become a “night out” now that I am a Momma.  Who wants to waste quality time with the babes for household shopping, not this girl that’s for sure!

Tonight’s mission (along with the usual list of items)…..obtain a natural toy cleaner product to clean the wonderful gift of used toys from one of my closest girlfriends, Tini.

I’m certainly one that is all about recycling and staying as close to nature as possible in many ways. When Tini offered a few of Aiden’s old toys, I was delighted to put them to use.  Of course I trust that they are coming from a clean home but I also know that EVERYTHING will end up in his mouth….they must be clean.

Mrs. Meyer’s Multi-Surface Cleaner

I wasn’t sure what natural toy cleaner I would purchase and always appreciated Target for their section of natural and plant derived cleaning products. I have used products such as Dr. Bronner, Seventh Generation & Method.

After reading the label’s front and back to decide what brand I would choose, I really liked Mrs. Meyer’s and decided on the multi-surface everyday cleaner. Soon, I found myself in much surprised aromatherapy bliss.  Quickly it made sense why the label reads “Aromatherapeutic household products, creating clean and happy homes since 2001”. I began twisting the caps and giving each bottle a sniff, I am not kidding when I say each scent was better than the next. Only one bottle was needed for the new lot of toys, how in the world could I decide?  Well why decide, I chose the top 3! (I am still dreaming of the geranium scent….next time)

Here are the scents that I purchased and how they are labeled:

  • Radish Scent – Crisp Peppery Snap
  • Lemon Verbena Scent– Light & Mild Citrus
  • Basil Scent- Cool & Crisp

Now that the hard part is over, time to give the toys a deep cleaning!

I was thoroughly impressed with the cleanliness of each toy and importantly a film or residue was not left behind. Of course, I was grateful to know my baby boy would not be smelling bleach or chemical’s throughout the house while I was carefully (& consciously) using the natural toy cleaner.

While writing this post I learned a bit about “thee Mrs. Meyer”  and she really seems to be quite the character, as a mother of nine she has a sensible approach to living a healthy balanced life.  Of course (with scents like THAAATT) she is a gardener and her famous quote is “Smells like a garden, cleans like the Dickens”.

Fun facts about the Mrs. Meyer brand:

  • Smells great, garden inspired scents provide an aromatherapeutic experience while you clean
  • Works great, third party testing proves that the products outperform other leading “green” brands.
  • Focused on obtaining materials from renewable plant resources such as coconut, corn, soy or olive.
  • Products do not contain chlorine, bleach, ammonia, petroleum distillates parabens, phosphates or phthalates.
  • Does not test on animals

Once the toys where cleaned I had to try the natural cleaner on the countertops and in the bathroom. I was so impressed that I am considering trying other products such as the laundry soap and importantly the surface scrub (Comet works wonder, just too many chemicals). Needless to say, I see a future post with my thoughts on an assortment of Mrs. Meyer’s products.

As a mom it is very important to me to begin eliminating the use of common cleaners with simply, too many chemicals!

Have you tried and Mrs. Meyer’s products or have any other suggestions for a natural toy cleaner, I would love to hear about them in the comment section below!
