HAPPY FAH-RYE-DAY!!!!
Fridays should be fun! You agree, right??
GREAT!!!!
Today’s post just happens to be just that… FUN!!!
Have you heard of Magic Milk before? No?! Well, I hadn’t either… Until about a week ago when I Googled ‘kid’s science experiment’.
I was looking for something fun to do and in walked Magic Mike…. WAIT… WHAT? Magic MILK! I meant MAGIC MILK!!!
Magic Milk is an experiment about chemical reactions. My little monster is only 3, so I didn’t really need to understand all the Chemistry of it. I looked at it as more of a cause and effect experiment.
We went all out. Made hypotheses and all. Bill Nye would’ve been proud!
Here’s how our Magic Milk experiment went:
We gathered our equipment:
- Milk
- Dish soap
- Toothpicks
- Qtips
- Food coloring
I put some dish soap into a small bowl. You don’t need much.
See….
My little scientists sat and waited patiently while I gathered the “science stuff” and took photos of “EEEEVERY thing”!
I poured some milk into small plates and grabbed the food coloring.
Put a few drops of food coloring onto each plate of milk. (Warn the scientists NOT to wiggle the table. They will anyway!)
This is where we discussed what we were going to do and made our hypotheses.
I first let them take a toothpick and dip it, NOT SWIRL, in the milk.
Next we dipped the toothpick into the dish soap and again, tried to guess what would happen when we DIP it into the milk.
WHOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHH!
{Insert some sort of scientific explanation about molecules and chemical bonds and such-and-such} Oooooh! 3rd grade science project…. CHECK!!! I love multitasking!!!!
We kept dipping and oohhhing and ahhing over the tie dye effect that we had going on.
Eventually it turns into something gorgeous like this… especially, since stirring is extremely probable. Even though you’ll explain over and over again…. to DIP. NOT SWIRL!!!
Then, my little genius wanted to know what would happen if we substituted water for milk. (YES, I’m pretty sure she used ‘substituted’)
HMMM!!!??? Good question little scientist! Let’s find out….
The food coloring spread out a little more. An observation made by my little scientists. (I was so proud!)
When the toothpick went in, it kinda worked. But you’ll see from the photo below, dragging the toothpick was much more efficient!
Well, there ya have it. A little science experiment perfect for the kids. The best part, you probably have all the ingredients already in your house!!!!
Happy Friday!
