Her eyes leaked a little when we gave it to her so I think it’s safe to say she loved her Mother’s Day gift.
My Mom is one of those people who is impossible to shop for. She doesn’t wear much jewelry. She never wants clothes. Knick-knacks mean more dusting. She doesn’t have a hobby. She always insists she never needs anything. Gift cards are usually the way to go but not on Mother’s day. A Mother’s day present should be meaningful.
My sister and I came up with a gift idea we thought would be affordable, thoughtful and fun to make. We decided on making her a tote bag. Not just any tote bag. A fingerprinted-unicorn-stenciled-tote-bag. Sounds crazy right?!! I don’t know really what else to call it. Good thing I don’t really have to. I’ll just show you….
This was an easy group gift. The most difficult part was making the stencil. My Mom is a unicorn fanatic so we knew she’d love a unicorn tote. I’m sure if I Googled it I could have found a unicorn stencil in a matter of minutes but my DIY slave driver wouldn’t have it. “Make your own”, he said as he cracked his whip! – So I did… and it only cost a dollar!!
{Stay tuned for the upcoming DIY Stencil Tutorial.}
After the stencil was made I grabbed the acrylic paint and the tote and headed to my Saster’s house.
We each picked the color we felt represented us and used it for our project. (I’m the pale pink, incase you were wondering!)
The fingerprinting was, umm… let’s just say, ‘entertaining’. With 4 adults, 2 children, and 2 babies… you could probably imagine how that went. We had paint in hair, mouths and Miss Monster even managed to get it on her foot. She wasn’t wearing sandals… Don’t ask. I didn’t!
We all took turns fingerprinting, double-teamed the wee ones and finished the project in under 30 minutes.
There were a few smudges but with 4 children we thought that was an amazing accomplishment!!
So what do you think? Pretty cute, right? And the group fingerprint idea would be great for anything, not just a tote. A t-shirt, apron, oven mitt, pillow case…. I won’t go on, you get the point.
My Mother thought it was such a special gift. One that was personalized by her children and grandchildren. One that she proclaimed was one of the most thoughtful gifts she had ever received.
It made the paint in the hair all worth it!
