Halloween is right around the corner!
Are you looking for a simple, inexpensive and AWESOME DIY costume idea? Well, look no further! I have your costume right here…. A DOUBLE DARE CONTESTANT!
We rocked this costume last year and it was a huge hit!
This costume works best as a couple’s costume. OR… even better, a foursome! We even had our own referee! But, with a referee or not, it is sure to be a success at any Halloween Party. Especially, if you and your crew are cool enough to entertain your friends by competing in some physical challenges. YES! PHYSICAL CHALENGES! Remember them?? Those were my favorite part. Especially because my red team won!! 🙂
Here’s what you’ll need:
Helmet:
- balloons
- newspaper
- flour
- water
- red/blue spray paint
- glue gun
- glue sticks
- black ribbon
- Velcro
Elbow & Knee Pads:
- dust masks
- black spray paint
Double Dare Shirt:
- red/blue t-shirt
- iron on transfers
- double dare logo (see below)
- printer
Red or Blue Pants:
- sweatpants or scrubs

Instructions:
Helmet:
If you’ve ever paper mached this is a cinch. Okay, if you’ve NEVER paper mached this is a cinch! But, you’ve paper mached before. Think back to 3rd grade!
Tear up strips of newspaper.
make a paper machete mix:
1 Cup flour and 2 Cups water.
Mix until smooth and paste like. (I would make a double batch to make 4 helmets)
Blow up balloon and place in bowl.
Paper machete top of balloon. The more layers you make the sturdier it will be.
Let dry 24 hours
Pop balloon. (Do this OUTSIDE! The hardened glue on the balloon acts like shrapnel. Believe me… I learned the hard way)
Trim helmet to fit your head then spray team color.
Glue ribbon on as chin strap and add Velcro to secure ends at chin. (We also lined them with stuffing to make them fit better)
Elbow & Knee Pads:
– Spray 4 dust masks black. (I know, crafty, right!?!)
Double Dare T-shirt:
Red or blue T-shirt. We got ours at AC Moore with 50% off coupons.
Get iron on transfers. I recommend Jolee’s Easy Image.
Print Double Dare logo on transfer.

Follow transfer directions and apply to shirt.
Pants:
Get sweatpants or scrub bottoms in the color of your shirt.
