I checked the weather 32 times – 65 degrees and a perfect family portrait day in Bucks County.
Even Glenn Hurricane Swartz said it was going to be perfect weather and advised everyone to go out and enjoy it. What Glenn forgot to mention was the wind! As I jumped out of my car ready to capture a set of family portraits, my hair blew hard North and I knew we were up for a fall challenge. I didn’t have a ponytail holder and a Mom who had this session booked 3 months in advance would be arriving any minute.
The family arrived perfectly dressed for their Family Portraits but I could see the look on Mom’s face – one of her sweet babies might blow away out here. They hadn’t had their pictures taken in years and I knew how important this was, I said: “let’s just give it a try”. As we headed to my favorite spot in the park, the little girl’s hair was blowing around like crazy. I had a plan that involved this gorgeous tree line but then I noticed a little path leading into a forest opening full of trees. Now you might be thinking… trees? in the wind? what?… but the trees actually made the perfect wind barrier and after giving everyone’s hair a little comb we captured the perfect sessions. During the Image Reveal – DAD CRIED!! When Dads cry (and not that men shouldn’t cry) I consider that the highest compliment, it takes a special image to make that happen.
Days later Mom send a text with a picture of her beautiful Canvas Gallery Wraps and Dad standing back to look – crying again. Such a sweet moment that I’ll always cherish.
I am such a planner, I like to envision my captures well before I pick up the camera. No two sessions are ever the same and there will always be something that makes me rethink the plan. What I have come to embrace over the years is that when my plan is not working I have to stay patient, another plan always shows up and magic usually happens. Each Family Portrait session has a groove and once we’re in it that’s when the kids start to have a good time, the calm washes over Mom’s face and I get to capture their true essence.
2017 had no shortage of Family Portrait fun and I am counting the days till the weather warms up, the green comes across Bucks County and I get to do it all over again. Here is a look at some of my 2017 favorites…
